Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s trailer hints the movie will answer a major Wakanda mystery linked to Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer hints at an answer to a major Wakanda/Thanos mystery: who ruled Wakanda after The Snap. From the moment Black Panther entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the world of Wakanda became a rich location for storytelling and mythology. It was also clear that Black Panther and Wakanda would remain key pieces of the MCU’s future, so audiences were shocked to see T’Challa become one of Thanos’ snap victims in Avengers: Infinity War. Although he returned in Avengers: Endgameit raised a big question about who ruled Wakanda after Thanos’ actions.
Instead of becoming yet another unanswered MCU question after Avengers: Endgame failed to address Wakanda’s status, speculation began to grow that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could instead reveal the truth regarding Wakanda’s throne. Doing so would not only give the MCU a chance to explore what life was like in Wakanda during The Blip but it could also be used to set up the sequel’s overall story. The tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 and Marvel’s decision not to recast T’Challa means Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will have to reveal the nation’s new leader, in addition to nominating the MCU’s next Black Panther.
Thanks to the first Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer, it has now seemingly been revealed that Wakanda’s Avengers: Endgame mystery will be answered. In the trailer, Ramonda is standing in front of the Wakandan throne and says she’s lost her entire family. While some might take this as a sign that Shuri could die in Black Panther 2, this is more likely to glimpse Ramonda and Wakanda during The Blip. The MCU canon confirmed that Shuri vanished from Thanos’ snap, so Ramonda would be right to say her entire family dela is gone after Avengers: Infinity War. As a result, this teases that Ramonda is Wakanda’s ruler after The Snap.
Who Will Rule Wakanda After T’Challa’s Death In Black Panther 2?
Ramonda ruling Wakanda after The Snap is one thing, but Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s trailer confirms a more permanent ruler is also needed. The first footage confirmed theories and rumors that T’Challa would die in the MCU. The mural for Wakanda’s former king and scenes from his funeral show just how big of a role his death him will have on the movie’s story. Ramonda very well could retain her status as Wakanda’s ruler after losing her son for a second time. She was previously Wakanda’s queen for years under T’Chaka’s leadership, and if she was the uniting voice during The Snap, staying in that role for the duration of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could work.
There are several other options for the MCU to choose T’Challa’s successor for Wakanda’s throne. The comics point to Shuri being the one to take on this responsibility and become the new Black Panther in Wakanda Forever. Marvel Studios could also surprise by having Okoye move up in Wakanda and go from leading the Dora Milaje to leading the entire country. It would also not be too big of a surprise if M’Baku went from leading the Jabari Tribe to becoming Wakanda’s king after T’Challa’s Black Panther 2 death. Even Nakia could take command if she and T’Challa married prior to the film’s events. But if Ramonda does not keep her position of power, it would seem most likely that Shuri will rule Wakanda after her brother’s death and become a bigger character for the MCU after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
